Qualifications and experience : A Bachelor of Science in Forestry (University of Aberdeen) and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Foresters of Great Britain. In 1998 was elected to the Council of the Institute of Chartered Foresters and re-elected in 2000 for a second term (until March 2002). Also a Fellow of the Arboricultural Association and a Member of the Institute of Horticulture. On the list of recognised Consultants of both the Institute of Chartered Foresters and the Arboricultural Association. Professional experience spans 32 years and includes working for a private firm of Tree Surgeons, as Arboricultural Officer to a London Borough for nearly five years, with the Department of the Environment funded Arboricultural Advisory and Information Service at the Forestry Commission Forest Research Station at Alice Holt for two years and for Hampshire County Council as Curator of the Hillier Arboretum for four years prior to starting as an independent Arboricultural Consultant in 1984. On the panel of thirteen Arboricultural Consultants who inspect trees and report to the First Secretary of State with respect to appeals under Schedule 3 of Tree Preservation Orders. The author of eleven books on trees and horticulture, in addition to various articles and contributions to other books. A member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission Conifer Specialist Group.
